A feat that is commonplace today was nearly universally considered impossible in 1896. When the news of Samuel Pierpont Langley’s achievement of heavier-than-air flight was spread around the world it was met with hope, wonder, fear, and doubts.
Human reactions to significant historical events are greatly influenced by the lens through which individuals perceive the world. This course provides a snapshot of daily life in Stafford County in 1896 to provide context to the significance of Langley’s achievement and how the continued advancement of aviation has changed our world.
